UPDATE: 10/30/15: This past July, shelter pups Kala and Keira were seen hugging right before they were going to be put down. The charity Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, GA could no longer afford care for the canines and resulted to Facebook as a last attempt to see if anyone would take them in.
To their surprise, they raised enough money to provide care for both dogs without needing to euthanize them. Companions Kala and Keira were taken care of and the shelter hoped that someone would soon adopt them.
The viral photo that started out as a heartbreaking story turned into a miraculous rescue and now, it has just gotten better. The inseparable pooches were both adopted by two other best friends Wendy and Pam. Kala and Keira can now live in a happy home – together!
The housemates and besties from Atlanta reached out to the charity after reading the dogs' story. Wendy had just lost two dogs, so Pam suggested taking in Kala and Keira.
"'We turned our tears into smiles with these two young, playful dogs," Wendy says. The two pairs of best friends turned loss and sorrow into something wonderful.
Animal lovers, this one's for you. What seems like a heartwarming picture of two best doggie friends hugging and keeping each other company in an animal shelter is actually something much sadder than you'd imagine.
These adorable pups, named Kala and Keira, were approaching their scheduled date to be euthanized when this picture was taken. No foster applications had been filed for either dog, meaning the shelter couldn't afford to keep feeding them with the large influx of animals being housed in the building. Which is exactly why the Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, GA, took to Facebook to find willing foster parents and donors for these loving pets.
Much to their surprise, within about two hours, Kala and Keira's lives were saved. They had received enough donations to take the pair to the vet to get head-to-toe exams, vaccinations, fecal and heartworm tests, have microchips put in place, as well as spay procedures done.
With an update to their original "plea for help," the pet rescue center said to all of their donors, "You are AMAZING people and we are grateful beyond words for your support."
Megan Bowman, a representative of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, told us over email that both of the dogs are currently at one of their veterinarian clinics, but have not yet been adopted. Once their visit to the vet is complete, they will be housed by a foster parent for about two weeks because they want to make sure the pups are 100% healthy before going to their forever home.
While Kala and Keira rest and recover in one of these homes, the adoption team at Pet Rescue is going to review and approve adoption applications. You can submit your own application for these precious pups .
We can only hope that the two besties are adopted together by someone who will make their lives truly happy and full of love—and hugs, of course!
