Turns out, there's some truth to Mom's warning, "Don't make that face, it will freeze that way." Over time, certain expressions (raising your eyebrows, squinting) can cause wrinkles; a loss of moisture and elasticity as you age makes them more prominent. An at-your-fingertips fix: petroleum jelly. "Every evening, swipe a light coat across your forehead after washing your face, while your skin is still damp," recommends Vermen Verallo-Rowell, MD, a Philippines-based dermatologist and founder of international skincare boutique VMV Hypoallergenics. "The petroleum jelly will lock in moisture, plumping lines." To reduce its potentially greasy feel, massage it in until your skin no longer feels slick.
Botox is the most effective in-office procedure for stopping your forehead creases from getting worse, says Dr. Verallo-Rowell. "When injected into your skin, Botox blocks the nerve impulses that cause your facial muscles to contract, keeping lines from getting deeper," she explains. The procedure costs from $175 to $500 and should be repeated every four to six months. For the best results, Dr. Verallo-Rowell recommends combining Botox with a topical retinoid, which will plump up existing wrinkles.
"The quickest way to deflect attention from forehead wrinkles is with an illuminating face primer," says Carmindy, makeup artist and cocreator of Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy. These primers contain tiny specks of mica, a sparkly mineral that settles into lines and reflects light away from them, lessening their appearance. Apply a thin layer over your moisturizer before you apply foundation. Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Foundation Primer, 1 oz, $38; .
