Disney has done a great job in recent years making their princesses and female protagonists stronger and more independent characters that parents can feel good having their daughters admire. However, a few antiquated ideas can still slip into their merchandise for young girls, and one mom has to express her outrage over a shirt she found at The Disney Store.
"I saw this embarrassment of a T-shirt at the Disney store in Westfield yesterday, aimed at young girls," Londoner Emma Palmer wrote in the photo caption. "This is just everything that is wrong with messaging to girls in a nutshell. It's 2018. Surely it is widely recognized that the content of your mind and words you speak are WAAAAAY more important than your f--king shoes!"
Upset that Disney appeared to be suggesting that fashion is more important than intelligence, Palmer approached store employees to voice her concern about the shirt, which is sold on the as "Cinderella Cap Sleeve Tee for Tweens."
In a comment under her original post, Palmer says she "got the classic 'we just work here' shrug (with a Disney grin of course) but they have been in touch with me today after I messaged them on their Facebook page to say they have sent the comments to the relevant department and will get back to me within 5 days. I said they need to take this off the shelves and have a serious think about the messages they choose on their clothing."
Some people have made light of the message, implying that Palmer is overreacting to something that's supposed to be funny and cute. She's not backing down from her stance, though.
"The messages you give to a girl should be about what they're thinking, their intelligence, and what they have to say – not what they look like," Palmer told . "I understand it is fun to dress up, to wear makeup, and to have nice things – but the point is at no point do I chose that as a substitute for a brain, or for what I have to say."
But many parents agreed with her. "I'm on your team Emma on this ... stupid bloody message for girls!" one woman wrote on Facebook.
Luckily, not all of Disney's shirts for girls have old-fashioned messages. There are plenty of empowering options! Check these out:
The combines the classic allure of being a princess with qualities girls can proudly aspire to, like being "fearless and courageous," having a "creative mind," and being enthusiastic about "books!"
And we love this Beauty is Found Within T-Shirt is a nod to Beauty and the Beast while reminding the wearer and anyone who sees it what really matters.
