Kathie Lee and Frank Gifford were married for nearly three decades before Frank's passing at age 84 would bring an end to their marriage in 2015. Though the couple faced in their 29-year relationship, including miscarriage and infidelity, it was a union full of love, dedication, and forgiveness. And it all started with a moment that caught Kathie Lee completely off guard.
This week on , Kathie Lee revealed that on the day her late husband proposed to her, she thought he was going to break up with her. In a very serious tone, Frank asked if they could chat privately, leading Kathie to believe he had something grave on his mind.
"We were in Atlantic City because I was performing," the Kathie Lee told Hoda. "And Frank had not realized, when we first started dating, how much performing I did." Kathie Lee feared that her busy schedule and show biz lifestyle had scared him away. "Very seriously he goes, 'can I talk to you?' I thought, oh my gosh, he's going to break up with me," she said.
Well it turns out, that tone was just an indication of how serious he was about their relationship. The couple excused themselves, so they could talk, and the next thing she knew, he was proposing. "He took out this magnificent ring," she told Hoda. "I'm not going to say what he said, but it was just beautiful."
Of course, the comedian's sense of humor made its way into the conversation. "I looked at [the ring] and said 'can I show my parents?!'" she quipped.
The sweet but low-key moment was Kathie Lee's dream proposal, and both Hoda and Kathie Lee agreed that simple but heartfelt proposals are best. "It just has to be intimate," Hoda said.
"And private," Kathie Lee added. "It's just really between you and that person. Some things in life should be sacred." And it looks like the special moment set the perfect tone for their marriage. "That marriage didn't work out," she joked. "Twenty-nine years—just didn't work out."
