Materials:

  • Sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Two 8" x 11" pieces of gray felt
  • Needle and thread
  • A cereal box
  • Fabric glue
  • 2 strings of thin elastic (12" or longer, as needed to fit around your kitty’s tummy)

    Instructions:

    1. Draw a 4"- to 5"-tall shark fin on paper, then cut out and pin to the felt. Cut two pieces of the felt using the paper guide, then sew the felt pieces together with a running stitch, leaving the bottom of the fin open. Trim the seam allowance so it looks clean.
    2. Cut a fin from the cereal box cardboard, but about 1 cm smaller all around than your felt fin so it fits nicely inside. Sew the fin bottom shut.
    3. Cut out two rectangles of fabric no longer than the fin is across and about 2" to 3" wide. Stack these two pieces and sew them together at the edges to make one rectangle.
    4. Draw a line with fabric glue down the middle of the rectangle and push the bottom of the fin into the glue. Hold until it bonds. Then cut two 1"-wide rectangles of felt, and glue them on each side where the fin meets the rectangle to secure. Press until dry.
    5. Punch a hole in each corner of the base rectangle, then pull the elastic string through to create a front and back loop, and knot tightly. Be sure you’re able to fit two fingers under the elastic after slipping it on your kitty.
