AIDS killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, according to UNAIDS, making it the most devastating epidemic in recorded history. So in an effort to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS, educate people about the disease and remember those who have been lost, every December 1 since 1988, activists and health officials have observed World AIDS Day.
Even today, an estimated 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, one out of five who don't even know it, which is why it is so important to educate and inform about the disease. World AIDS Day 2010 is all about raising awareness, fighting HIV prejudice and stopping the spread of the disease.
