It's only after the storm that a beautiful rainbow appears—and the sentiment couldn't be more true for two parents who are welcoming a newborn into the world after previously losing a child. After the heartbreak came an awe-inspiring miracle, hence the term "rainbow baby."
The picture above was captured by , a Michigan photographer, who was honored to be chosen for her first "rainbow baby" shoot. She wrote in a Facebook post, "a rainbow follows a storm and it gives hope that things get better."
And it's not just this family who benefited from the joyous, yet emotional photo shoot commemorating the newest member of their family, as well as the one that was lost—many families across the country are coping with their own heartbreak when it comes to losing a child.
According to She Knows, "as many as 20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage; an average of 1 percent of pregnancies in the U.S. end in stillbirth."
With so many suffering from grief, rainbow baby photo shoots like this one are a wonderful way to spread awareness about this heartbreaking issue. In a way, these sweet little ones acknowledge the past, but also offer hope for the future.
As Maya Angelou once said, "God puts rainbows in the clouds so that each of us – in the dreariest and most dreaded moments – can see a possibility of hope."
