Everything We Know About 'Frozen 2,' Which Is Bound To Be 'An Epic Mystery'

Frozen 2 hits theaters this fall, and we have all the details on the cast, plot, and more.

Fans of Frozen have been eagerly waiting for the second installment of the Disney film — nearly six years, to be exact. Thankfully, they won't have to wait too much longer, because Frozen 2 is hitting theaters this fall.

And with several cast members and members of the creative team stating that this film is just as good, if not better, than the original, that release date can't come soon enough. If you want to know what's next for Elsa and Anna, here's everything we know so far about Frozen 2.

Who is in the film?

All of your favorite characters — Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, and the trolls — will be returning for Frozen 2, as well as some of your lesser favorites (ahem, Hans), all voiced by the same actors as in the original movie. That means we'll definitely hear some gorgeous ballads and catchy tunes from Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell.

We can also expect to see at least two new characters on screen. The first is Lieutenant Matthias, who will be voiced by Sterling K. Brown, and the second is Anna and Elsa's mother, Queen Iduna, will be voiced by Evan Rachel Wood. Although their mother was killed, she'll be shown in a flashback in the new movie.

What is Frozen 2 about?

The exact plot of Frozen 2 has been kept somewhat under wraps, but thankfully the film's creators, as well as the recently released trailer, have given us a few hints. IGN reported that, at Disney's recent D23 expo, director Chris Buck said the movie will be "an epic mystery." Buck also added that the movie revolves around "a past that wasn’t what it seems, a past that could threaten the future of Arendelle, a past that leads our gang to an enchanted forest. Powers that were once too strong for the world are not enough."

The movie is largely built around the much-wondered roots of Elsa's powers, and the trailer seems to reflect this. It shows our gang of heroes going on an adventure through the enchanted forest, encountering other powers and creatures that are unlike anything we've seen in Arendelle. Throughout the trailer, we see hints that Elsa will rediscover her past and go on another journey of self-discovery.

We can also expect some progression in Anna and Kristoff's love story, as well as some surely heart-wrenching flashbacks from Elsa and Anna's childhood. In one film clip, which were aired during the D23 expo, we see Kristoff trying to find the right time to propose to Anna. In another, we go back in time to see Queen Iduna singing to her two young daughters.

Will Elsa finally get a love interest?

Frozen went against the typical princess storyline, focusing on the love between sisters rather than romantic love. While many fans praised Disney for that choice, some have long wondered whether Elsa will finally get a love interest of her own in Frozen 2, and whether that love interest would be a man or woman. Unfortunately, those holding out for an ice king or queen for Elsa are out of luck.

In an interview with IGN , Frozen 2 songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez said Elsa will continue to focus on her own journey of self-discovery.

"Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest," Anderson-Lopez said. "There's so many movies that define a woman by her romantic interest. That's not a story that we wanted to tell at this point in time. What we really wanted to tell was if you have these powers, how do you grow and change and find your place in the world and find answers that haven't been found before?"

What songs can we expect?

The songs in Frozen were incredible ("Let It Go" did take home an Oscar after all). So will the songs in Frozen 2 live up to the standard? According to Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, yes!

"I’m not even sure if I’m allowed to say this, but can I just say I think the songs are even better in this movie," Gad said during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, later adding, "The songs are even catchier."

Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez, who wrote the music for the first film, have returned for Frozen 2. Those at the D23 expo were treated to a few lines from Elsa's first major song "Into the Unknown," during one of the two clips that were shown. The song, according to EW, is about Elsa trying to resist, but ultimately giving into, the urge to follow a melodic voice from her past that has suddenly reappeared. The lyrics for the song go:

"Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake? Or are you someone out there who’s a little bit like me, who knows deep down I’m not where I’m meant to be? Every day’s a little harder as I feel my power grow. Don’t you know there’s a part of me that longs to go into the unknown?"

Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff ended the panel by performing a rendition of a new song from the film entitled “Some Things Never Change,” about how, you guessed it, some things never change.
