Here's some heartwarming news to get you through the rest of Monday: There's a Mr Rogers biopic in the works, with Tom Hanks attached to play the starring role.
reports that Hanks will play iconic TV personality Fred Rogers in You Are My Friend, a feature which will chronicle the real-life friendship between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. Per the official synopsis, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon, and—of course—finds his perspective on life transformed by spending time with Rogers. .
"The really cool thing about Tom Hanks playing Fred is that Fred and Tom Hanks are similar in a really essential way in that they are gentle people, they are soft spoken people, but they are powerful people," Junod told . "I think that Tom Hanks can really bring that aspect of Fred out."
“I’m thrilled to be making You Are My Friend,” said director Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) in a statement. "The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”
The script for You Are My Friend—written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster —appeared on the 2013 Black List, which is a list of Hollywood's best unproduced screenplays as voted for by executives.
Separately, called Won't You Be My Neighbor? is also on the way. It just premiered at Sundance, and will be released in theaters on June 8.
