A video of a Nashville nurse singing to her dying cancer patient is touching millions of hearts. As the nurse serenades the 63-year-old woman, you'll be reminded of the positive impact we can have when we open up our hearts to others.
Margaret Smith was diagnosed with liver cancer a year ago, and her health took a turn for the worse last week. After being admitted to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Margaret met nurse Olivia Neufelder, whom she called her "angel."
Olivia spent hours with Margaret as her anesthetic wore off and she comforted her in the moments leading up to her death by singing Margaret's favorite song: "Dancing in the Sky" by Dani and Lizzie. A video of the serenade, which Margaret's daughter Megan shared on Facebook, has already been viewed more than 3.6 million times.
"You never left her side by choice!" Megan wrote. "Words cannot describe the appreciation and love we feel for nurse Olivia who mom calls her angel!"
"Your dedication to your patients is beyond any that I have seen, you truly are a beam of light and I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and care and love you shared for my mother," she continued. "God bless you Olivia!"
In an interview with a local radio station, 1010 WINS, Olivia discussed her emotional experience as Margaret's nurse, explaining that the experience challenged her in many ways. It is clear from Olivia's tear-filled eyes in the video that she developed a deep connection with her patient.
After being transferred to a nursing home, Margaret passed away on Wednesday.
"Knowing that she will be dancing in the heavens and singing with the angels helps me find peace during this somber time," she told 1010 WINS. "I pray this story helps people find comfort through a dark time they may be going through."
