It looks like Susan Sarandon might've been so enamored by Queen Elizabeth that she forgot about the royal rule book when greeting Her Majesty at the Royal Windsor Cup polo match this past weekend. Understandable, of course. This is the Queen we're talking about.
To give you a quick regal etiquette refresher, royal protocol when meeting the Queen dictates that the guest should wait to be approached by Her Majesty first before speaking to her.[asset removed due to syndication rights]
But the 71-year-old actress seemingly defied the "rule" and went ahead and initiated a handshake on her own.
The monarch remained seated in her chair for the exchange and clearly didn't seem to mind about the protocol breach. She proceeded to take Susan's hand and the two smiled as they chatted. Meanwhile, Prince Philip reportedly didn't know who the Oscar winner was and afterwards had to lean over to get the scoop from his wife.
When talking about royal protocol, it's worth noting that many — yes, including Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Prince Harry — have bent the regal rules countless times before. The do's and don'ts are very tricky and little offenses are to be expected.
Also, Susan is certainly not the only celebrity to ever do something out of the ordinary when interacting with Her Majesty. For instance, actor Mickey Rooney even went as far as to kiss the royal's hand during their first encounter.
So, really, what we're trying to say is that this is a rather minor break with convention, and the Queen really didn't seem to mind!
