Healthy summer fun is only a hop, a step and a lunge away when you're in an outdoor fitness class. It's the perfect chance to soak up the sun and to bond with your friends.
and are teaming up at more than 20 locations across the country to offer free outdoor fitness classes featuring Tim Ferriss's "4 Fundamentals of Fitness." These movements cover a variety of exercise needs in only an hour.
The classes are built around the "4 Fundamentals": "The Blurpee," "The Pistol," "The Cat Crawl," and "The Trap Walk." These moves incorporate different ranges of motion and increase muscular strength, endurance and power, flexibility, cardiovascular strength, coordination, agility and balance.
These exercises are twists on strength and cardio classics: the burpee, the one-legged squat, a crawl and a deep lunge with one arm reaching upward. In between circuits of the "4 Fundamentals" are other staples of strengthening exercise classes and intense bursts of cardio.
Ditching your dedicated treadmill for the outdoors has other benefits, too. Phil Timmons, the national director of group fitness at Life Time Fitness, says shaking up a training routine by going outside can work your muscles in new ways. The softer terrain outside has a more gentle impact on joints than concrete or your typical gym floor would. And training on uneven ground – like hills, sand or even the stretch of grass at your local park – forces muscles to work together and improve balance.
The classes, taught boot-camp style, are capped at 15-25 people. The instructors have modified versions of exercises for both fitness newbies and exercise enthusiasts.
Classes are offered three times a week throughout the summer. You can sign up for your six free sessions at your local Life Time Fitness center.
