Everyone has at least one childhood memory of visiting Dairy Queen for a soft-serve cone or hot fudge sundae. It's an understandably beloved chain thanks to sweet treats like the Dilly bar and classic banana split. Heck, we love it so much we've gone so far as to write a definitive ranking of the best Blizzards. And now the ice cream company seems to be working on something new that's about to totally change the Blizzard game: The Royal Blizzard.
Except this isn't an ordinary Blizzard. No, it's royalty. So instead of keeping it simple and stuffing the cup with regular blended soft-serve, DQ employees add a tunnel of fudge to the center of the treat. Yes, a sweet, sweet center of rich chocolate lies at the heart of this Blizzard—not unlike Ben and Jerry's famous core series.
After getting what very well could be the first scoop (sorry, we had to) of the Royal Blizzard, we reached out to Dairy Queen directly for more deets. Offered in three flavors—Royal Oreo, Royal New York Cheesecake, and Royal Rocky Road Brownie—the cups feature a topping-filled centers of chocolate fudge, strawberry sauce, and marshmallow, respectively.
"The Royal Blizzard treat line is fit for royalty, and it's what DQ fans expect from America's queen," a brand representative wrote in a press release. "This is our most significant launch since we first introduced Blizzard Treats 30 years ago." The company regards the Royal Blizzard as so special it's turned the traditional red spoon to sparkly gold.
The newbie officially hits DQ menus nationwide today, in preparation for Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday on April 21. Prices range from about $3.49 for a mini to about $5.19 for a large.
