A bold pattern in the entryway––think of-the-moment zigzags or broad blocks of color––sets a vibrant tone for your home. It's also a chance to try a style before making a bigger commitment, like painting your entire floor. Your basic tools: acrylic fabric paint from the craft store and a bristly paintbrush to work it into the weave.

In early 2011, interior designer Vanessa de Vargas (Turquoise-LA.com) and design consultant Vanessa Kogevinas (VanessaKogevinas.com) came up with a unique idea for a good deed: to make over a residence at Los Angeles' Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children where women live for up to two years as they move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Within six months, 30 local designers had transformed one room apiece, working nights and weekends and using donated furnishings to complete the makeovers. "We wanted to inspire these women to move beyond the hardships they've suffered," says de Vargas. Here's a look at some of the character-rich spaces they created, plus some tricks of the trade that could work in your home.

For five years, Jennifer Rathbone's world has revolved around her daughter's life-threatening illness. Woman's Day thought she could use a refuge at the end of the day, so we sent designer Annie Selke to turn her bedroom into one.

Jennifer Rathbone had redone her three children's rooms once or twice as they grew, but the bedroom she and her husband, John, share--a slightly claustrophobic attic space full of odd angles--remained untouched. Thing is, she'd been a little busy, especially since the summer of 2006, when the Schenectady, NY, couple's 1-year-old, Ila, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of pediatric cancer called neuroblastoma. Since then, through remission and relapse, Jennifer has spent her days shuttling Ila from one doctor or hospital to another. "I've basically been Ila's nurse," she says, and that inspired her to go to nursing school "so I could help other sick kids." Though the Rathbones continue to deal with Ila's illness, "we want to make sure this disease doesn't rule our lives," says Jennifer, now 39. "We try to live every day to its fullest."

The Woman's Day team thought it was time for Jennifer to focus on herself a bit, starting with updating that neglected bedroom. So we enlisted the help of Massachusetts-based designer Annie Selke, author of Fresh American Spaces. Of the five design styles she outlines there, Selke pegged Jennifer as a Refined Romantic. (To find your best match, go to WomansDay.com/Selke.) Next, she set about bringing the style to life in this challenging space. Jennifer loved the results, and so did the kids: "They all want to sleep in here, but I haven't let them...yet!" Her favorite part: the chaise that replaced her old rocker. "My mother, who passed away years ago, had a chaise just like it," she says. "When I sit there with Ila, I think of my mom."

Want to wake up your décor? Take a cue from two adventurous homeowners, who made over their spaces by following several simple guidelines. Most important: When mi patterns, keep the palette to a few colors, like this one in aqua, poppy and white. And remember: Whites don’t play well together, so pick one shade and stick with it (otherwise an ultrabright white would make an adjacent cream look muddy). For more tips, plus real-life examples and ideas for getting the look, click through below.

Want to add a touch of elegance to your dining room but don't know where to begin? We've got everything you need to get started.

1. Pick the right style. Look to your furniture for cues. Ornate upholstered chairs? Consider a crystal chandelier. Farmhouse table? Try a fixture with a rustic finish.

2. Determine the right scale. A too-big chandelier will make a small room look even smaller, while a tiny fixture will disappear in a big room. Add your room's length and width in feet and get a fixture whose width is the same number of inches(a 12' x 16' room gets a 28" light), advises Jeff Dross of Kichler Lighting. Another useful guideline: A chandelier should be at least half the table width (so it won't look puny). If your ceiling are higher than the standard 8 feet, go for a taller fixture; if your dining area is part of a great room, go even larger.

3. Get the right wattage. Since most of us use our dining rooms for more than just dining (paying bills, quilting), make sure that your bulbs provide enough task lighting. Multiply the length and width of the room in feet, then multiply that by 1.5 to get all the wattage you need (a 12' x 16' room needs 288 watts, so eight 40-watt bulbs will do). A dimmer lets you lower the light to a cozy level for entertaining.

4. Hang at the right height. The bottom of a chandelier should hit about 30" (36" at most) above the tabletop. That brings the light close enough for tasks, clears the view for conversation and avoids unflattering shadows. Tip: Swap regular blubs for pink ones when entertaining––the rosy glow is ultra-flattering. And be sure you leave 30 inches between the chandelier and tabletop.
